Which Type of Plastic Can Be Recycled?

Plastic bottles and jugs are the most common household plastics that can be recycled. Most curbside recycling services will accept these, as they fall into the classification of a #1 or #2 plastic. We accept these at Ever Green Environmental, and we even have a zero-sort recycling policy, so you can toss your plastics in the bin without worry in Murrells Inlet.

What Should I Know About Recycling Plastic Containers?

Plastics are designated into 7 different classifications, numbered 1-7. #1 is PET and is the highest recycling value. Examples of PET are plastic water bottles or a clear plastic container. As you go down the classifications, the plastics become less recyclable. #7 is entirely non-recyclable plastic material.

Can I Recycle Colored Plastic?

No. You shouldn’t be recycling any plastic containers that are heavily or darkly colored. An example of this would be your navy blue colored laundry detergent bottle at home. This is because when the plastic is recycled, it can only become darker shades of the original dye or black, which is limiting. You can recycle clear, white and lightly colored plastic containers, as these colors can be re-dyed into a variety of different colors for reuse.

Can I Recycle Plastic Food Containers?

If your plastic food container is clear, white or lightly colored and is either #1 or #2 classification, then yes, you can recycle it. Just make sure that you have removed all food residue from the plastic, since any plastic that has food residue cannot be recycled.

How Can I Identify PET Plastic or Tell if it is Plastic #1?

Most plastic containers that are in the #1 classification or are PET have a number 1 surrounded by a triangle molded on the bottom or side of the container. Checking this number on your plastic container is an easy way to see if you can safely recycle it.
